5 Facebook pages changes that affect your business


Facebook pages are changing appearance and this means that business with communication strategies need to adapt to these changes. In fact, Facebook has made many changes that can affect anyone who has a page on Facebook.  We see these changes as new opportunities for brands in Cyprus to engage their fans with the new features aiding their marketing efforts.

Bellow we list five of the most interesting changes.

1.    Cover Photo and Profile Image

As you can see one of the biggest changes is the cover photo, which replaces the photo strip across the Page’s top. You now have one large image, which must be a minimum of 399 pixels, to showcase your page, as the cover photo. Also you can have a photo cover designed to take advantage the extra space you have now, with maximum dimensions 850 pixels by 315 pixels.

The profile image size also has been changed to a square of 180 by 180 pixels. The profile picture appears next to every post in the news feed with dimensions 30 pixels by 30 pixels. The best use for the profile picture would be to use your logo but an eye-catching picture might also be appropriate.

 

2.    Highlighted larger and Pinned and Posts

Facebook has always favored letting you tell a story by image and not words.  Following its own gospel, posts with pictures and videos become more prominent with the ability to make a post “highlighted” and appear larger or “pinned” to stay on top of your wall for up to seven days.  These are definitely ways to attract eye balls to your page.

To highlight a story, click the star icon in the upper right of a post. This way it will span all the way across your Timeline as shown in the post below.

You can also pin the story to the top of your Timeline for up to seven days. To do this, click the pencil icon in the upper right of the post and select Pin to Top.

3.    Setting Company Milestones

A change that makes your Timeline more interesting is the introduction of Milestones. You can now tell people about big events in the life of your brand or company.

All you need to do is click on the line that runs down the middle of your Timeline and select Milestone. Then you fill out the relevant information as shown below.  It is possible to go back in your Timeline and add past events.

 With the new changes posts from your fans are in a separate area. This means that your Timeline is now more focused on you and your story.

Make sure you make your Timeline as visually appealing as possible by carefully choosing your images.  This is your history you are presenting and the better you tell it the more favorable impression you will be making to your fans.

4.    New Applications

Definetely, one of the biggest changes is the removal of the ability to set a default landing tab. Tabbed applications are still available and if you have created a custom welcome tab or added any other customized application, it still works.

You now have up to 12 applications you can use and the four applications that you choose to place at to the top row will appear prominently. By default you cannot change the position of the photos, so technically you only have extra three high visibility slots  that you have control over in that top row .

To move your apps around you must follow these steps:

1.    Click the down arrow next to your top row of apps to display all of your apps.

2.    Click the pencil icon in the upper right corner of the app.

3.    Select the app that you would like to swap positions with.

As mentioned earlier, you cannot change the position of the Photos app which appears first.

 

 

Welcome Settings

Marketers seem to dislike the disappearance of the default landing tab as it offered the ability to deliver a strong, branded message, The new app buttons give, however, an added opportunity to be creative. You can change the image that appears for the app and you can rename the app to give a call to action as shown on Bata’s page.

If you want to change your app image, again display all of your apps with the down arrow button next to the top row of apps and then click on the pencil icon. Then scroll down to the Edit Setting selection and from there you can add a custom tab image.

5.    Admin Panel, Facebook Insights and Messaging

Another important change is the location of the Insights, the statistics Facebook provides page administrators. The statistics can now be accessed by clicking on the Admin Panel in the upper right corner.

Navigation now is very different but all statistics from the previous version are still there.

You will still be able to see the old-style Page Dashboard following the steps:

1.    Click the Manage drop-down menu

2.    Edit Page.

From the Admin Page, you can invite your email contacts, invite friends, share your page and create an ad from the Build Audience drop-down menu.

Facebook is giving us lots of options to learn more about the new page design from the Help drop-down menu. During the Preview, the Help drop-down menu links to tutorials, but once you publish your Timeline you will have access to some different options.

 

Breaking from tradition with the new changes more information is available on Pages. By clicking on a Page’s Likes box,underneath their cover photo, you can now see highlighted Insights.  These include the age group talking the most about the page, the city where most fans call home and a time graph with Likes and interactions.

 

Live Statistics

 

Pages will also have the ability to receive messages from fans. The Message feature can be turned on or off from the Manage Permissions area of the Admin Dashboard. The Message button is enabled by default so if you want to disable it, you will need to uncheck the box. Messages can only be initiated by a fan—they cannot be initiated by the page to a fan. A page can reply to the message sent.
