5 things you ought to know about internet usage in Cyprus

posted Jun 5, 2014, 8:40 AM by Alecos Loucaides   [ updated Jun 5, 2014, 8:45 AM ]

Internet usage in Cyprus
If you are considering new ways to promote your business, the internet is a channel you should pay close attention to if you are not already using it. In this article we analyse five important statistical facts about social media usage of Cypriot residences, the age of internet users in Cyprus, the number of computer devices in Cyprus households, the number of people that have internet access and the most popular online activities.

This information will help you better understand internet usage in Cyprus and the opportunities that arise from this channel. All data is collected from the Statistical Services of Cyprus website using data from 2013.

#1 Social Media Usage of Cypriot Residents

Social media usage in Cyprus
Social media continues to grow rapidly globally, providing users a great way to engage and connect with their friends, colleagues, families and their favourite brands. Cyprus is not an exception to this trend. According to research carried out by governmental statistics services in Cyprus, 66.7% of the people who use the Internet are connected with social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Trip Advisor, Instagram etc. More specifically, 428 555 people used social media to connect with others.

The importance of this extended use of social media for a business is that it has become a necessity to maintain a professional presence on relevant social networks, projecting the right brand image and messages to your customers as well as people that are interested in your product or service. For example, it is almost unthinkable if you are a hotel or restaurant not to have a presence on Trip Advisor, a social media platform that claims to present “objective reviews, traveler photographs and travel advise from real travelers” which to a great degree is used by tourists.

#2 Ages of Internet Users in Cyprus

Knowing the age of the internet user, and being able to target advertising campaigns according to age, is probably the strongest attribute of internet marketing.

The number of internet users in Cyprus aged 16-24 is 104 848, followed by the age group of 25-54 which is is the largest segment with 377 488 users. The internet users of the age group of 55-74 are 159 495. Internet users in Cyprus with the highest use are those between the ages of 16-24 (94.7%). Students use the internet to an extremely high degree with 99.0% of them accessing it. Furthermore, it is noted that men use the internet more frequently than women with 63.3% and 60.3% respectively.

Advertising platforms such as Facebook Ads and Google AdWords give advertisers extremely useful demographic targeting tools for the Cyprus market. Facebook has extremely detailed demographic information on users and Google is not far behind.

#3 Computers at households in Cyprus

Household computer penetration in Cyprus
The percentage of households with access to a computer increase continuously year by year. In fact, 70.3% of the households in Cyprus had access to a computer, either desktop, portable or handheld, according to the government agency dealing with statistics in Cyprus during the year of 2013. In numbers, 489 325 individuals have access to the such devices. In particular, 27.3% of households had access to a desktop, 62.0% to a portable computer, 18.7% to a tablet computer and 7.1% to a netbook.

#4 Internet access at home

Cyprus home internet access
Not only are computer devices increasing but also internet access in households is increasing in Cyprus year by year. In 2013, the Internet was accessed at least once in 64.7% of the households compared to 31.7% in 2005 which means that 641 831 individuals use the internet. There is a significant increase in broadband connections and a simultaneous decrease in narrow-band connections (Modem, ISDN) over the years. It is also worth noting that around 551,762 people use their mobile devices to access the internet away from home or the office.

With the increased usage of mobile devices comes increased access to their users via screens on smart phones and tablets. It is now possible to specifically target mobile devices with both Facebook Ads and Google AdWords.

5# Popular Activities

Popular web activities in Cyprus
In regards to what users are doing when they are connected to the internet, research results showed that the most popular activity is searching for information about goods or services and sending/receiving emails with 85.7% and 74.7%, respectively. It should be noted that 19.8 % of internet users made online orders for goods and services in the first three months of 2013. More than half of them ordered clothes and sports goods (53,4%) and 49.8% ordered travel arrangements (tickets, hotel, car hire etc).

It is important to understand that search engines such as Google and Bing allow advertisements on search results pages. If you think about it, this is probably the most effective use of advertising as you can reach potential customers looking for information or getting ready to make a purchase for a product or service.  Furthermore email efforts, when targeted to potential consumers that have opted in and want to receive your newsletters with product/services news or offers, can be extremely rewarding ones.

Conclusion

The rapid growth of social media usage of Cypriot residents, as well as the ability to segment by age or gender of user, present a huge marketing opportunity allowing the efficient targeting of desired audiences for specific marketing campaigns. In addition, the very fact that the usage of both computer devices and internet is increasing, the option to marketers to create and implement complete digital strategic marketing plans rather than just banners on the internet. Finally, the fact that the most popular activity for Cypriots online is searching for services and products, opens an exciting opportunity to utilizing Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization to promote products and services.

Before the Christmas shopping season the company rewarded Facebook fans by offering free nutrition and personal training advise for three days via an application. Members of the page could ask their question and nutrition and training experts replied on behalf of Bata Cyprus. This activity increased the engagement rate of the page and the “word of mouse” advertisement on Facebook.

Satisfied with the brand awareness exposure achieved, Bata Cyprus then proceeded with a photo upload competition where Shoe Lovers uploaded their favorite shoe and invited their friends to vote for it. Having the members inviting their friends further boosted the page activity and made the brand name go viral on Facebook.

In between the activities mentioned previously Bata Cyprus used the page to inform the members for special discounts, fashion news, and shoe tips.

More important, Bata Cyprus uploaded the new collection arrivals in photo albums and informed customers about price, size, and color availability.

According to Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (ΙΑΒ) latest Internet Advertising Report, United States internet ad revenues hit $31.7 billion in 2011. This is a new record marking a 22% increase over 2010’s numbers. Mobile advertising was the fastest growing segment with 149% year on year increase. The performance of the world’s most dynamic advertising market certainly shows the way forward for less developed ones and Cypriot companies seem to be taking note.

The IAB comprises of over 500 media and technology companies that are responsible for selling 86% of online advertising in the United States. IAB is dedicated to the growth of the interactive advertising marketplace, of interactive’s share of total marketing spend, and of its members’ share of total marketing spend. The IAB educates marketers, agencies, media companies and the wider business community about the value of interactive advertising. IAB’s Internet Advertising Report utilizes data and information reported directly to PwC, publicly available online corporates data and information provided by online and selling companies.

Internet advertising revenues in the United States totaled $31.7 billion for the full year of 2011. The report unveils that fourth quarter revenues for 2011 hit a best-ever at $9 billion, with 15% increase over the third quarter 2011, which came in at $7.8 billion and 20% growth year- over- year in comparison to 2010’s $7.4 billion. Internet advertising revenues for the full year of 2011 increased 22 percent over 2010.

Other results from the report include the fact that mobile Internet advertising experienced the fastest increase of all categories with 149% and $1.6 billion for 2011 up from $0.6 billion for 2010. Significant uptick of 29% was achieved by digital video bringing in $1.8 billion in revenue in 2011 compared to $1.4 billion in 2010. Display related advertising revenues in 2011 totaled $11.1 billion and 35% of 2011 revenues, compared to 15% and $9.6 billion in 2010. Another highlight of the report was that retail advertisers, who continue to represent the largest category of Internet ad spending, totaled 22% and $7.1 billion in 2011, in correlation to 21% and $ 5.5 billion for 2010.

“This historic moment, with an especially impressive achievement in mobile, is indicative of an increased awareness from advertisers that they need to reach consumers where they are spending their time—in digital media,” said Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO, IAB. “Pushing past the $30 billion barrier in the United States, the interactive advertising industry confirms its central place in media. Across search, display, digital video, digital provides a wealth of opportunity for brands and consumers. With the proliferation of smartphones and tablets, it is likely that the tremendous growth in mobile will continue as these screens become even more crucial to the marketing mix.”

“The year 2011 saw mobile advertising become a meaningful category,” said David Silverman, Partner, PwC U.S. “By combining some of the best features of the Internet, along with portability and location-based technology, mobile advertising is enabling marketers to deliver timely, targeted, relevant, and local advertisements in a manner that was not previously possible. It is for these reasons that we expect strong growth to continue with mobile advertising.”

“Digital advertising’s stellar performance in 2011 attests to the high value marketers put on the medium,” said Sherrill Mane, Senior Vice President, Research, Analytics, and Measurement, IAB. “In addition, with advancement in areas like mobile and digital video, it appears that there will be robust avenues for interactive’s growth in the future.”

Here are the results from the full year in comparison with last year’s numbers:

The results are considered the most accurate measurement of interactive revenues because the data is compiled from information supplied by companies selling advertisement on the Internet. Survey includes data concerning online advertising revenues from websites, commercial online services, free email providers and other companies selling online advertising.

Unfortunately no Ιnternet advertising numbers are available for the Cyprus market but Cypriot advertisers seem to start realizing that consumers spend an increasing amount of time online. A concerted effort to bring to them a digital message is well underway. Cyprus’ leading telecom companies CYTA and MTN are battling it out utilizing Google’s adwords and other online banners in an effort to connect with Cypriot customers via their computers or mobile devices. Smaller companies have actually led the way taking advantage of the lower cost per lead and higher return on investment digital channels offer over traditional advertising channels earlier. Companies such as Zanettos Cyprus Tavern and shoe retailer BATA Cyprus have successfully employed advertising on Facebook to promote their brands.
